The Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET) is why we are here. It is a Japanese government initiative that brings the world to Japan, as ALTs (Assistant Language Teacher), SEAs (Sports Education Advisor) or CIRs (Coordinators for International Relations). Most participants were ALTs, sent to kindergartens, elementary schools, junior and senior high schools, while CIRs work in local government or board of education offices in their assigned areas.
During the participant’s tenure, they get to interact with the local community and experience the culture and country. To say it was one of the greatest experiences of our lives might sound over the top… but it would be fairly accurate. :)
If you want to find out more about applying for the JET Programme, check out the following:
- The Official JET Programme Website. Contains detailed information and resources.
- The Consulate General of Japan in Sydney. For direct contact and application in Sydney, and also details of selection criteria.
- The Embassy of Japan in Australia. Useful if you wish to apply through different states in Australia, and general information about organisations linked to JET.
For current or returning JETs, we have links on our Resources page.
